Can Nuclear Energy Fulfill the Growing Energy Needs of AI?

Synopsis

As the world grapples with rising energy needs driven by AI, IAEA's chief Rafael Grossi argues that nuclear energy is essential. Discover how nuclear power can support our digital future while addressing climate challenges.

Key Takeaways

  • Nuclear energy is vital for addressing the increasing demand for electricity.
  • AI data centers are consuming a growing share of global energy.
  • Major tech companies are turning to nuclear solutions.
  • Advanced nuclear technologies can provide safe and efficient energy.
  • Collaboration between AI and nuclear energy can drive innovation.

Seoul, Oct 31 (NationPress) The leader of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated on Friday that nuclear power must be integral in addressing the increasing global electricity demands resulting from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and the ongoing digital transformation.

During a video address at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi highlighted that the rapid expansion of AI is escalating worldwide energy use, presenting both challenges and opportunities for clean energy, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

"Data centers currently account for 1.5% of the world's electricity consumption, and this figure is rising by over 10% annually," Grossi remarked during his address at the event held in Gyeongju, the host city for this year's APEC summit.

"Major corporations like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta are entering power purchase agreements and seeking alternative methods for nuclear energy to fuel their AI data centers."

Grossi asserted that nuclear energy provides a scalable, dependable, and low-carbon option that can supplement renewable energy, ensuring a consistent power supply that operates "day and night, unaffected by weather conditions."

He pointed out that over two dozen nations are currently aiming to triple global nuclear capacity by mid-century, while around 30 emerging nations are developing civilian nuclear initiatives with the support of the IAEA.

"Numerous advanced designs, including small modular reactors (SMRs) and next-generation systems, are being developed in APEC regions," he added. "These innovations can facilitate the flexible expansion of nuclear energy to various regions while ensuring strong safety and efficiency."

Furthermore, Grossi emphasized that AI and nuclear energy can "evolve together," as economies shift towards more digital frameworks and industrial operations become increasingly electrified.

"AI fuels innovation, and nuclear energy bolsters it," he stated. "The potential is evident. Demand for electricity will increase, climate challenges will amplify, and technology will progress rapidly. Every clean energy source is vital, and nuclear plays a crucial role in this landscape."

Point of View

It is evident that nuclear energy must be part of our strategy to meet the rising energy demands in a digital age. The IAEA's insights underscore the importance of integrating clean energy solutions to support innovation and sustainability, ensuring our nation's energy needs are met responsibly.
