Over 7 Million Malawians Sign Up for 2025 General Elections

Lilongwe, Dec 19 (NationPress) Recent preliminary data reveals that over 7 million Malawians have successfully registered through three voter registration initiatives ahead of the September 2025 general elections. This figure exceeds the 6.8 million voters recorded during the 2019 elections, as per the information provided by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
The National Statistical Office of Malawi had anticipated that about 10,957,490 individuals would register. However, by the end of the final phase of registration on December 11, the total count stood at 7,162,217 voters, which accounts for 65 percent of the expected registrations.
It is important to note that these figures are provisional, and the MEC has indicated that there may be adjustments following the data cleaning process.
According to Andrew Mpesi, the Chief Elections Officer of the MEC, the commission will announce the final numbers once any discrepancies, such as duplicate entries, have been resolved, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
The voter registration exercises were conducted in three distinct phases starting from November, categorizing the country’s district councils into groups of 14 for the first two phases and eight for the final phase.
The current population of Malawi is estimated to be around 21.7 million, with the youth making up over 50 percent.
Malawi is set to hold tripartite elections on September 16, 2025, to select a president, members of parliament, and local government officials.
With at least 20 registered political parties, the main contenders include the ruling Malawi Congress Party, the leading opposition Democratic Progressive Party, and the United Transformation Movement, although potential alliances with smaller parties may also emerge.
