Pakistan Punjab rains kill 7, injure 20 in 24 hours; toll rises to 22
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
At least seven people, including two children, were killed and 20 others injured in rain-related incidents across Pakistan's Punjab province in the 24 hours preceding Sunday, 26 July, according to local media reports. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed fatalities from drowning and structural collapses, while injuries were reported due to roof cave-ins and electrocution.
Incident-by-Incident Breakdown
In Lahore, three people — a man, a woman, and a child — were killed and five others injured across four separate roof-collapse incidents at Garhi Shahu Railway Colony, Bobby Plaza, Saggian Pind, and Kahna. In Kasur district, two people — a man and a child — died and three others were injured after a house roof collapsed near Adda Dhing Shah.
A woman died in Faisalabad following a rain-triggered roof collapse, while a child drowned in accumulated rainwater near Pathan Colony in Gujranwala. In Bahawalnagar, three people sustained injuries in a roof collapse and one man was electrocuted by an electric pole during the downpour.
Additional injuries were reported in Narowal (two women in Sair Bajwa village), Sialkot (one woman in Darma Wala neighbourhood), Nankana Sahib and Sheikhupura (three women in two separate roof-collapse incidents), and Okara (two men after an animal shed collapsed).
Cumulative Punjab Toll
Addressing a press conference, the PDMA Director General stated that 22 people have been killed and 183 others injured in rain-related incidents across Punjab so far this season. Houses and livestock have also been damaged, the authority confirmed.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Also Hit Hard
The destruction is not confined to Punjab. As of Wednesday, the PDMA reported that at least 20 people — including eight children, seven men, and three women — had died in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) since 19 July, with 19 others injured, following heavy rains and flash floods that caused roof and wall collapses and swept victims into floodwaters.
Affected districts in KP include Buner, Bajaur, Shangla, Swabi, Lower Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Peshawar, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Tor Ghar, Kurram, and North and South Waziristan. The PDMA said 30 houses were damaged by rains and flash floods across the province.
Pattern of Seasonal Devastation
This comes amid Pakistan's recurring monsoon crisis, which has claimed hundreds of lives in recent years — most catastrophically during the 2022 super-floods that submerged a third of the country. The back-to-back fatalities in both Punjab and KP within days of each other suggest the 2025 monsoon season is tracking dangerously. With peak monsoon weeks still ahead, authorities face mounting pressure on disaster response capacity and early-warning infrastructure.
