Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on Saturday, 11 July walked through a sports innovation exhibition in Auckland, viewing cutting-edge sports equipment before attending a high-profile gala luncheon that brought together leaders from politics, business, academia, and the arts. The joint appearance underscored the rapidly deepening bilateral relationship between India and New Zealand.

The two leaders toured an exhibition highlighting innovative sports technology and equipment, and interacted with decorated New Zealand athletes as well as stakeholders linked to high-performance sports programmes, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Prime Minister Modi used the occasion to recall 100 years of sports engagement between the two nations, emphasising that the Sports Joint Action Plan concluded during his visit would help both countries broaden their sporting ties well beyond cricket.

The visit also carried forward momentum around India's preparations to host the Commonwealth Games 2030, with the MEA noting that expanding sports cooperation was a shared priority for both sides in the lead-up to that milestone.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the complementarities between the two nations and their enduring people-to-people ties.

Modi welcomed the elevation of bilateral relations to the level of a Strategic Partnership and expressed confidence that it would deepen ongoing collaboration across sectors. In his welcome remarks, Prime Minister Luxon outlined a shared vision for strengthening bilateral cooperation and advancing mutual prosperity.

FTA and Trade Targets

A key highlight of the luncheon address was Prime Minister Modi's reference to the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which he said was concluded in record time. He stated that the agreement would open new opportunities for businesses, youth, and farmers in both countries, and help the two sides achieve their stated goal of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.

The MEA, in a post on social media platform X following the luncheon, noted: 'The two leaders welcomed the elevation of India–New Zealand ties to a Strategic Partnership. PM highlighted the opportunities created by the recently concluded FTA, including for businesses, the youth and farmers and help achieve the target of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.'
