A Moment of Pride: PM Modi's Upcoming Visit to Israel
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jerusalem, Feb 24 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant two-day visit to Israel starting Wednesday, potentially paving the way for new agreements between the two nations, particularly in critical areas such as economy, culture, defence, and perhaps the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
On February 25-26, PM Modi will undertake a State Visit to Israel at the invitation of Benjamin Netanyahu, his Israeli counterpart. This trip marks Modi's second visit to Israel, following his historic 2017 trip that unlocked new opportunities in defence, agriculture, and water management.
According to Lauren Dagan Amoss, a researcher and lecturer specializing in Indian politics and foreign policy, there is a palpable sense of pride and gratitude towards PM Modi's visit. She noted how the Indian community in Israel appreciates India's economic progress, digital transformation, and enhanced diplomatic stature under Modi's leadership. "Indians here are eagerly looking forward to his presence, as he always makes an effort to connect with the Indian diaspora. This bond holds significant value for them," Amoss remarked to IANS on the eve of Modi's visit.
During his time in Israel, Prime Minister Modi is expected to engage with Netanyahu, as the two leaders will assess the substantial advancements in the India-Israel Strategic Partnership. They will also explore further collaboration in diverse sectors, including science, technology, innovation, defence, security, agriculture, water management, trade, and people-to-people exchanges.
Amoss emphasized the shared security challenges both India and Israel face, such as terrorism and radicalization. She highlighted that defence cooperation is a cornerstone of their bilateral relationship, with both nations set to benefit from each other’s experiences, particularly in areas like air defence and counter-terrorism. This collaborative learning fosters a deeper and more strategic alliance.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated on Tuesday that PM Modi's visit will reaffirm the enduring strategic partnership between India and Israel. The leaders are also anticipated to share insights on regional and global issues of shared concern.
Amoss underscored that Modi's inaugural visit to Israel in 2017 was a "historic" milestone, being the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. She remarked, "His upcoming visit holds significant meaning, especially during these challenging times. Since October 7, India has shown unwavering support for Israel, which has nurtured trust not just between the governments but among the people of both nations."
In light of recent military actions and the situation in Gaza, both countries recognize the importance of their relationship. India and Israel respect each other's achievements in defence technology, although challenges may arise regarding intellectual property and technology transfer. However, Amoss expressed hope that this visit will facilitate improved collaboration.
