President Yoon of South Korea Allows Ruling Party to Determine His Presidential Term

Seoul, Dec 7 (NationPress) The President of South Korea, Yoon Suk-yeol, announced on Saturday his decision to allow the ruling People Power Party to determine his presidential term, suggesting a readiness to accept a reduced tenure.

In a televised statement, Yoon expressed his intention to enable the governing party to identify strategies for stabilizing the political landscape, which includes deliberating on the duration of his presidential term. He highlighted the shared responsibility of the party and government in addressing state matters, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

The beleaguered President conveyed his apologies to the public, acknowledging their shock regarding the declaration of martial law, and emphasized that he would not evade his legal or political accountability.

Yoon assured the public that there would be no further declarations of martial law, bowing his head during the televised address.

He had initially declared an emergency martial law on Tuesday night, which was repealed shortly after as the parliament voted against it.

The principal liberal opposition, the Democratic Party, along with five other minor parties, initiated a motion for impeachment against Yoon on Wednesday, with plans to vote on it Saturday afternoon.

Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the ruling People Power Party, stated to the media that Yoon’s resignation appears inevitable, asserting that the President cannot fulfill his duties effectively under the current conditions.

Han further mentioned that he would strive to alleviate public distress by engaging in discussions with the Prime Minister regarding citizens' welfare and critical issues.

Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the main opposition party, expressed disappointment with Yoon's address, stating it failed to resonate with the public's sentiments and amplified feelings of betrayal and anger.

Lee insisted that the only viable solutions to stabilize the situation would be an immediate resignation or impeachment of the President, committing to exert every effort to facilitate either outcome.
