Qatar's Diplomatic Team Visits Syria to Conclude Embassy Reopening

Doha, Dec 16 (NationPress) A Qatari diplomatic team has landed in Damascus, the capital city of Syria, to finalize the necessary steps for the reopening of Qatar's embassy, as stated by Majed Al Ansari, the spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Ministry.

The delegation engaged in discussions with representatives from Syria's transitional government and reiterated Qatar's dedication to aiding the Syrian populace in their quest for security, peace, development, and prosperity, according to Al Ansari, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

Al Ansari also mentioned that the attendees of the meeting explored avenues to boost the distribution of Qatari humanitarian assistance and evaluated the immediate needs of the Syrian population during this crucial period.

On Wednesday, Qatar made an announcement regarding the reopening of its embassy in Damascus, just days after a militant coalition led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) removed former President Bashar al-Assad from power on December 8. Qatar had suspended its embassy operations in Damascus back in 2011, following the onset of anti-government protests in Syria.

In related news, Russia has evacuated a portion of its diplomatic staff from the Syrian capital, though its embassy remains operational, as stated by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

These diplomats were transported via a flight operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces from the Khmeimim Air Base in Syria back to Moscow, according to a statement made by the Ministry on Sunday.

The press release, shared on Telegram, confirmed, "The Russian embassy in Damascus continues its operations."

After an 11-day offensive, a rebel coalition primarily consisting of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) successfully overthrew Assad, who then fled to Russia along with his family.
