Washington, Feb 26 (NationPress) Vivek Ramaswamy, the biotech billionaire, is campaigning for the position of Governor of Ohio, having gained the full and unequivocal endorsement of US President Donald Trump immediately.
"I am privileged to declare my candidacy for governor of a remarkable state that stands at the core of the greatest nation in history -- the state where I was born and raised, and where my wife Apoorva and I are raising our two sons -- a state poised for an even brighter future," Ramaswamy stated during a rally in Cincinnati on Monday.
Apoorva is Vivek Ramaswamy's spouse and they are parents to two children.
Following his announcement, President Trump expressed his endorsement on his social media platform, Truth Social.
"VIVEK RAMASWAMY is running for Governor of the Great State of Ohio. I know him well, have competed against him, and he is truly something SPECIAL. He's Young, Strong, and Smart! Vivek is also a genuinely good person, who deeply loves our Country. He will be an EXCELLENT Governor of Ohio, will never disappoint you, and has my FULL AND UNCONDITIONAL ENDORSEMENT!"
President Trump's endorsement holds significant weight within the Republican Party, and Ramaswamy is set to gain from it; however, he must first secure the party's nomination and then face off against his Democratic opponent, whoever that may be.
Ramaswamy gained public notoriety as a candidate for the Republican Party's presidential nomination but withdrew early in the primaries, subsequently endorsing Trump and forming a close alliance with the President.
Trump appointed him co-chair of a Department for Government Efficiency alongside Elon Musk, but Ramaswamy soon left.
If Ramaswamy succeeds, he will become the third US Governor of Indian heritage to date.
Bobby Jindal, the two-term Governor of Louisiana, and Nikki Haley, the two-term Governor of South Carolina, were the first and second. Both Jindal and Haley are from the Republican Party, making Ramaswamy the third Republican of Indian descent to lead a state as Governor.
Despite Indian Americans predominantly leaning towards the Democratic Party, no Democrat of Indian descent has yet been elected Governor in any of the 50 states. However, this could change if Kamala Harris, the former Vice President, chooses to run for the position in her home state of California, a topic speculated about in political discussions.
She could potentially seek the party's presidential nomination, but historically, losing presidential nominees, such as her in 2024, have struggled to gain traction with primary voters across both parties.
