Are Enforced Disappearances and Extrajudicial Killings Rising in Balochistan by Pakistani Forces?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Quetta, Feb 10 (NationPress) Amidst the rising tide of violence against civilians in Balochistan, a prominent human rights organization has highlighted two alarming incidents—the forced disappearance of a Baloch civilian in Hub district and the extrajudicial killing of another civilian in Kech district, reportedly by Pakistani forces.
The Baloch National Movement's Human Rights Department, known as Paank, reported that a resident from the Tump region in Kech, named Sohrab, was forcibly taken from Baloch Colony in Hub on February 8 during a raid conducted by Pakistan’s Frontier Corps (FC) and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD).
This incident marks Sohrab’s third experience of enforced disappearance; he had previously been detained for five days in 2017 and for 40 days in 2019 before being released.
Paank also disclosed that on February 8, the mutilated body of a Baloch civilian, identified as Nisar, was discovered in the Buleda area of Kech. According to local sources, he had been forcibly disappeared by a death squad and was killed the same day.
In a related event, the Baloch National Movement (BNM) held a protest at Porta Nigra Square in Trier, Germany, on Sunday to draw global attention to the ongoing and systematic human rights violations in Balochistan perpetrated by Pakistani forces.
The protestors expressed solidarity with the people of Balochistan, voicing serious concerns over enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, and the repression of political dissenters and human rights activists by Pakistan. They emphasized that these actions are being conducted in an organized manner by the Pakistani authorities.
Utilizing placards, banners, and speeches, the participants urged the international community, global human rights organizations, and media outlets to break their silence regarding the situation in Balochistan. Speakers pointed out that despite decades of documented human rights abuses, the plight of the Baloch nation continues to be overlooked on international platforms,” stated the BNM.
The demonstration also emphasized the severe impact these abuses have on women, children, and the families of those who have been forcibly disappeared.
During the protest, speakers highlighted that the “families of the disappeared—particularly mothers and children—have been seeking justice and the peaceful return of their loved ones for years, yet they face collective punishment rather than receiving justice.”
Criticism was also directed at the Pakistan Army, with allegations that it is using force against civilians in Balochistan.
Notably, in recent days, reports have emerged of dozens of individuals reportedly killed in direct military action across several districts in Balochistan, including Gwadar, Mastung, and Kech. Protesters declared that “these circumstances necessitate the international community to reassess military and economic aid, defense partnerships, and arms sales to Pakistan.”
The demonstrators called for the United Nations, the European Union, and international human rights bodies to conduct independent inquiries into the human rights violations in Balochistan by Pakistani authorities and to hold those accountable under international law.
