Romania's Social Democratic Party Takes Lead in Parliamentary Elections

Bucharest, Dec 2 (NationPress) The Social Democratic Party (PSD) of Romania, which is part of the ruling coalition, has positioned itself as the leading party in the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, based on nearly complete results disclosed by the Central Electoral Bureau on Monday.

The PSD obtained 22.12% of the vote for the Senate and 21.9% for the Chamber of Deputies. While it remains the largest political entity in Romania, the PSD has seen a reduction in its representation in parliament compared to earlier terms.

The nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians, an unexpected player in the previous elections, climbed to the second position with 17.95% of the Senate votes and 17.56% for the Chamber of Deputies.

Another partner in the coalition, the National Liberal Party, received 14.64% of the Senate votes and 13.68% for the Chamber. Following them was the Save Romania Union, which attained 11.02% and 11.06%, respectively.

Initial results suggest that no individual party is likely to achieve a majority, making the formation of a coalition government almost certain, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

More than 8,000 candidates contested for 332 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 137 seats in the Senate. With over 18 million registered voters, the voter turnout was 53.33%, surpassing participation rates from the 2016 and 2020 elections.
