On April 10, 2023, in Washington (NationPress), it was announced that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is slated to visit India next month following a successful meeting with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. This visit aims to enhance collaboration in areas such as defense, trade, and critical technologies.

The US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, indicated that discussions revolved around bilateral relations, particularly concerning trade, critical minerals, defense, and the Quad.

“Secretary Rubio is eager to visit India next month!” Gor remarked, hinting at a significant high-level engagement aimed at fortifying ties. Misri’s meeting with Rubio took place at the White House.

This meeting was a highlight of Misri’s time in Washington, emphasizing the increasing strategic alignment between the two nations in both economic and security matters.

In separate discussions, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met with Misri and reaffirmed the strong partnership between the nations, as stated by Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott.

“The leaders reaffirmed the close partnership between the two countries and exchanged insights regarding the Persian Gulf situation and various global and regional priorities,” the statement highlighted.

Regional security issues, particularly in West Asia, were prominent topics of discussion, with both sides sharing perspectives amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Misri also engaged with Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker, where they reviewed the India-US bilateral agenda since the last Foreign Office Consultations in December.

They shared evaluations on recent events in West Asia, as well as regional concerns of mutual interest, according to the Indian Embassy.

Economic and technological collaboration remained focal points during the engagement. In a meeting with Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg, both parties agreed to advance cooperation in emerging sectors.

“They committed to enhancing collaboration under Pax Silica and broader economic and technological initiatives, including AI and critical minerals,” the embassy noted.

Additionally, Misri interacted with Washington’s strategic community, discussing the current state and future trajectory of India–US bilateral relations.

These discussions evaluated “the opportunities to seize and the challenges to address in a rapidly changing global landscape,” alongside the implications of ongoing geopolitical developments for global energy, food, and economic security.
