Moscow, March 11 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Russia expressed its anticipation that the United States will inform Moscow about the results of the US-Ukraine discussions taking place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
"A meeting between the US and Ukraine is set to occur in Jeddah today. The US, in its quest for a peaceful resolution, will keep us informed in some manner," stated Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, as reported by the Russian news agency Tass.
The talks between Ukrainian and US representatives began in Jeddah on Tuesday and are expected to significantly influence Washington's ongoing support for Kyiv and efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict. "The dialogue with the US team commenced very positively; we are striving for a fair and enduring peace," remarked Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Ukrainian team reportedly includes Yermak, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, and Deputy Chief of Staff Pavlo Palisa. On the other hand, the US delegation is led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
High expectations surround the meeting, seen as an opportunity to mend ties between Kyiv and Washington following a tense exchange between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump in February, according to the Ukrainian media outlet The Kyiv Independent.
In a press briefing on Monday, ahead of the discussions with the Ukrainian delegates, Rubio noted, "The most crucial takeaway from this meeting should be a strong assurance that Ukraine is ready to undertake challenging measures, just as the Russians will need to do to bring this conflict to a resolution, or at least a pause in hostilities."
"The Russians cannot dominate all of Ukraine, and clearly, it will be quite challenging for Ukraine to push the Russians back to their 2014 positions within a feasible timeframe. Thus, the only path forward in this war is through diplomacy and getting both parties to the negotiating table where a resolution is achievable. The French and British have provided substantial support over the past week, and we remain optimistic about our discussions tomorrow," Rubio added.
In parallel, Ukraine has launched a significant drone offensive against Russia ahead of the Tuesday meeting between the US and Ukrainian teams in Saudi Arabia. The Defence Ministry reported that 337 Ukrainian drones were intercepted over Russian territories early on Tuesday, including 91 in the Moscow Region. A Russian analyst criticized the Ukrainian aggression, asserting that the Ukrainian side believes their militaristic approach "will assist" them in the negotiations in Jeddah, as reported by Tass.
