Riyadh, March 11 (NationPress) Saudi Arabia is preparing to host crucial discussions on Tuesday, uniting the United States and Ukraine to address the ongoing conflict with Russia.
The meetings, set to occur in Jeddah, follow a tense exchange during President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the White House on February 28, 2025, which heightened tensions between the two nations.
Although Riyadh may appear to be an unusual choice for such vital talks, Saudi Arabia, under the guidance of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has established itself as a neutral intermediary with goals to mediate peace.
The Kingdom has made notable advancements in recent years to position itself as a significant player in global diplomacy, including proposing itself as a potential site for direct talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced earlier on Friday that Jeddah, a coastal city along the Red Sea, would serve as the venue for these important discussions.
The choice of Jeddah over Riyadh, the capital where previous Russia-US talks were held, remains uncertain. However, the Saudi government reaffirmed its dedication to facilitating "a lasting peace to conclude the Ukrainian crisis."
The Ukrainian delegation, led by President Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, will attend the discussions.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is anticipated to lead the American contingent and engage with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Prior to the talks, Sybiha had a "constructive call" with Rubio, highlighting the necessity of achieving a sustainable peace and ending the conflict promptly.
The results of the discussions in Jeddah could significantly affect the three-year-old conflict and may influence the future of diplomatic initiatives in the region.
