Dhaka, Dec 12 (NationPress) In a highly contentious decision that many critics argue diminishes the legacy of those who sacrificed during the Bangladesh Liberation War, the union of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall at Dhaka University has taken down the original nameplate, replacing it with a new one that reads 'Osman Hadi Hall'. This new name honors the radical Islamist leader Sharif Osman Hadi, as reported by local media.
Sharif Osman Hadi, who is contesting for the Dhaka-8 parliamentary seat in the forthcoming general elections, suffered serious injuries in a shooting by unidentified attackers in Dhaka’s Paltan area on the same day.
Additionally, several students were observed painting over a prominent graffiti mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman located on the main building of the hall.
Musaddiq Ibn Ali Mohammad, the cultural affairs secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), stated that the hall's nameplate removal was executed with a crane around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, as reported by the leading Bangladeshi daily The Dhaka Tribune.
Eyewitnesses noted that the process of erasing the hall's original name began shortly after at approximately 9:45 p.m., with efforts to cover the mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman commencing around 11:15 p.m.
When questioned about whether the hall council had received the necessary official permission to change the nameplate and cover the mural, Hall Council Vice President Muslimur Rahman responded to the media, saying, 'The students demanded that this be removed. So, we are removing it based on the students' verdict.'
Meanwhile, interim government chief advisor Muhammad Yunus has pledged to uphold and promote the vision of the late radical leader, assuring supporters that Hadi's ideals would persist even after his demise. Yunus expressed his commitment to realizing Hadi's 'dream' and promised to carry it forward for future generations.
'O dear Osman Hadi, we have not come here to bid you farewell. You live within our hearts, and as long as Bangladesh exists, you will remain in the hearts of all Bangladeshis. No one can erase you from there. Millions have gathered here today in waves, while crores across Bangladesh and abroad are waiting to hear about Hadi,' Yunus stated, as quoted by The Daily Star.
