Quito, Aug 18 (NationPress) - In a tragic incident, seven individuals lost their lives in a shooting that took place in the northwestern Ecuadorian province of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, as reported by local media.

On Sunday, a group of armed assailants dressed in black stormed a billiard hall in Santo Domingo, the province's capital, and indiscriminately opened fire on the patrons, according to media sources.

Local law enforcement swiftly secured the area following the shooting. Preliminary investigations revealed that among the deceased were a retired police officer and a notorious criminal gang leader known as “Rasta,” as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

The province, situated between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific coast and serving as a crossroads for various drug trafficking routes, has been plagued by frequent violent incidents attributed to gang conflicts.

In a similar surge of violence, earlier in June, at least eight people were shot dead in the southwestern coastal city of Guayaquil, according to national police reports.

The June incident occurred in the Pascuales district, along the Daule highway. Police confirmed that eight individuals succumbed to gunfire, and officers were swiftly deployed to investigate and track down the perpetrators.

Local media indicated that the victims were shot in Guayaquil's industrial area, close to the Peca region and outside a municipal market just as vendors were starting their day.

Five of the victims were said to be motorcycle taxi drivers, as reported by local television.

Authorities suggested that the increase in violence could be connected to the recent confiscation of four assault rifles over the weekend.

Guayaquil, recognized as one of Ecuador's most perilous cities, has experienced a string of violent attacks in recent days. Previously, four men were killed in a residence in Bastion Popular, and a married couple was fatally shot shortly after dropping their children off at school in the Mucho Lote neighborhood.

The city, which serves as the capital of Guayas province, has been under a state of emergency since April, due to what the government describes as a “grave internal disturbance.”
