Gwangju, Dec 11 (NationPress) A steel structure at a library construction site in the southwestern city of South Korea's Gwangju collapsed on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of two workers and leaving two others trapped, according to officials.
The incident occurred at 1:58 PM, leading firefighters to the scene where they managed to rescue a 47-year-old worker who was found in cardiac arrest and subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital.
Firefighters also located a second victim, who was unresponsive earlier in the day, and finally extricated him at 8:13 PM. Unfortunately, he was declared dead at the scene, with officials still trying to determine his identity.
Authorities indicated that two more individuals are currently unaccounted for and will continue search operations overnight.
The four victims were identified as technicians with a subcontractor, all being Korean nationals.
Firefighting officials noted that the collapse seemed to happen while ready-mixed concrete was being poured.
A representative from the construction site informed Yonhap News Agency that the roof of the second floor appeared to have caved in onto the first floor, lacking any supports in between.
The library, under construction by the Gwangju metropolitan government, is located on the site of a former waste incineration plant.
This 51.6 billion-won (USD 35 million) project encompasses a total floor area of 11,286 square meters across two stories above ground and two basement levels.
Meanwhile, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has ordered authorities to exert maximum effort in rescuing the trapped workers at the library construction site.
Lee issued this directive during a policy briefing by the labour ministry in Sejong, following the collapse at approximately 2 PM, which initially killed one worker and entrapped three others.
He urged relevant ministries to "mobilize all available personnel and equipment" for the rescue.
