Seoul, Dec 14 (NationPress) The South Korean government is currently evaluating a system that would permit international tourists to utilize buses and subways using foreign-issued credit cards, as officials announced on Sunday.
The Ministry of Land and Transport has recently initiated plans to commission a study aimed at implementing an open-loop payment system for public transportation, with the study set to commence this month and extend through the end of the following year.
This research is designed to facilitate foreigners in paying for public transportation directly with their international credit cards. At present, tourists are required to either purchase and reload transportation cards using cash or acquire prepaid cards exclusively designed for foreigners, leading to potential inconveniences, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Through this study, the ministry intends to assess the necessary budget to launch this new payment system and to determine who will be responsible for the associated costs.
There is an increasing demand for enhancements as the number of foreign visitors surged by 15.2% year-on-year to 15.82 million during the January-October period.
Prominent cities worldwide, such as New York and London, have already implemented systems that allow riders to pay for public transport using their own credit cards.
"Rolling out this system nationwide in a short timeframe may be challenging; thus, the government is likely to pursue a phased implementation in collaboration with local authorities and public transport operators," stated a government representative.
If the study results in a decision to move forward with the system, actual implementation could potentially begin as early as 2027, he added.
