Seoul, Oct 27 (NationPress) The Unification Ministry of South Korea on Monday reiterated its appeal for a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, labeling the event a "great chance" for dialogue.
As Trump embarked on an Asia tour that includes his visit to South Korea on October 29-30 for the APEC meetings, he referred to North Korea as "somewhat of a nuclear power" and expressed his willingness to meet with Kim, which has sparked hopes for their first encounter in over six years, according to reports from Yonhap News Agency.
"This APEC event presents a valuable opportunity for the leaders of the U.S. and North Korea to engage in discussions," stated Koo Byoung-sam, spokesperson at the unification ministry, during a press briefing regarding the potential for a Trump-Kim meeting during APEC.
Koo reiterated the call for a meeting after Unification Minister Chung Dong-young urged the leaders of both nations last week not to overlook the chance to converse during the APEC event.
In a possible indication of preparations for a Trump-Kim summit, North Korea has been observed engaging in cleaning, pruning, weeding, and photographing activities in the northern section of the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom—the site of Trump's last meeting with Kim in 2019—over the past week.
North Korea was noted to be cleaning the area over the weekend, Koo stated, although he added that this activity seemed to be part of routine operations.
On the other hand, a senior official from the South Korean presidential office commented that a meeting between Trump and Kim during this APEC gathering is "highly improbable."
Third Deputy National Security Adviser Oh Hyun-joo made this observation amid speculation about a possible meeting as Trump is set to arrive in South Korea on Wednesday for the gathering in the southeastern city of Gyeongju.
“There are discussions regarding a potential meeting, but I believe that possibility is very unlikely,” Oh remarked during a meeting with foreign media in Seoul.
Trump had previously stated his openness to meeting Kim during his forthcoming visit to South Korea in a press briefing aboard Air Force One on Friday.
