New Delhi, Dec 30 (NationPress) The Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India, Mahishini Colonne, expressed admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's exceptional leadership and underscored the extensive support provided by India to Sri Lanka during the recent Cyclone Ditwah.

She referred to PM Modi as “a vital voice of the Global South” and “a highly esteemed leader,” praising India's rapid and diverse assistance in the aftermath of the cyclone.

In a conversation with IANS, she stated, “For us, Prime Minister Modi is viewed as a significant advocate for the Global South on the global stage. He is a highly respected leader, regarded by the people of Sri Lanka as a cherished friend, consistently standing by us during challenging times. Following the Easter Sunday attacks in April 2019, when Sri Lanka was devastated and travel advisories were issued, Prime Minister Modi visited within six weeks, significantly aiding in the restoration of tourism and revitalizing our economy.”

Discussing India’s involvement during Cyclone Ditwah, the High Commissioner noted, “India promptly responded within hours, assisting Sri Lanka in various ways. During rescue operations, relief efforts, and medical aid, India deployed helicopters, provided relief supplies, and sent medical professionals, showcasing a multifaceted support system for us. As I mentioned, India is also joining Sri Lanka in the next phase of rebuilding and recovery. This isn’t the first occasion India has stepped up.”

Providing more insights into the post-cyclone scenario, she shared, “The cyclone has departed, and relief operations have concluded. Basic services and connectivity have been restored, with India having played a crucial role in assisting Sri Lanka, as you may already know.”

“Operation Sagar Bandhu initiated while the cyclone was still active, right after it impacted Sri Lanka, and we have now transitioned to the next phase. The Government of Sri Lanka has allocated emergency funds, and those who lost housing and infrastructure are currently in camps,” she added.

Emphasizing the enduring partnership between India and Sri Lanka, Colonne remarked, “India has undoubtedly emerged as a reliable and steadfast partner for Sri Lanka time and again. I can genuinely speak for Sri Lanka on this. The people of Sri Lanka view India as a trusted ally that consistently supports us.”

She also mentioned trade relations, stating, “As you are likely aware, India and Sri Lanka established a free trade agreement back in 1998, marking the first such agreement between the two nations. Since then, our trade relationship has flourished. Today, India stands as Sri Lanka's largest trading partner, yet the FTA requires an upgrade, and we are optimistic that discussions will commence soon.”
