Khartoum, Feb 24 (NationPress) The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) declared that it has successfully lifted the blockade on the crucial city of El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, and has regained control of al-Gitaina city in White Nile State.
Nabil Abdalla, the SAF's spokesman, stated, "The SAF's Al-Sayyad (mobile forces) effectively opened the passage to El Obeid and coordinated with the Al-Hajana forces within the city."
Furthermore, he mentioned that army units from White Nile State successfully dismantled the militia forces and cleared al-Gitaina city, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
As per the official statement, military units advanced from Al-Rahad city in North Kordofan State, which had been "liberated" six days prior, and reached El Obeid, which had been under siege by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since the outbreak of civil war.
El Obeid serves as a vital trade and agricultural center in Sudan. The oil pipeline connecting South Sudan to Port Sudan on the Red Sea traverses through this city.
Recently, the army confirmed its progress in the ongoing conflict against the RSF across various fronts.
On February 17, the military announced that it had achieved full control over the Kafouri area in Bahri city, the final stronghold of the RSF in that region.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a severe conflict between the SAF and the RSF, resulting in at least 29,683 fatalities, according to the most recent estimates by international organizations.
