The United Nations reported on June 5 (NationPress) that the ongoing conflict has triggered a significant rise in humanitarian requirements across Sudan, exacerbated by the cholera outbreak, as noted by a UN spokesperson.
In Khartoum state, nearly 9,700 individuals have recently been displaced due to conflict, according to Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, referencing data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
In South Kordofan, over 9,000 residents fled the town of Dibebat in Al Quoz locality last week as a result of fierce clashes. The situation remains precarious, he stated, quoting the IOM on Wednesday.
Furthermore, approximately 600 people were displaced from the Abu Shouk camp and El Fasher town in North Darfur state just last week, he added.
Regarding the cholera situation, the spokesperson reported a steady rise in daily cases in River Nile state in the north, while numbers in Khartoum state are decreasing, as per Xinhua.
In the last two weeks, health officials in River Nile state have documented over 180 cumulative cases and four fatalities. Notably, 55 cases originated from other states, highlighting the disease's cross-regional spread, said Dujarric.
Humanitarian partners caution that ongoing displacement, damaged infrastructure, and restricted access to safe water are intensifying the disease transmission, he stated.
Meanwhile, thousands of displaced individuals are returning to Blue Nile state and urgently require assistance, lacking food, clean water, healthcare, shelter, and education, he mentioned.
Humanitarian organizations are striving to address the escalating needs in Sudan. However, insecurity, access challenges, and critical funding shortages continue to hinder their response, according to the spokesperson.
"Once again, we urge for an immediate cessation of hostilities, unrestricted humanitarian access across borders and conflict lines, protection for civilians, and increased funding to enhance our efforts," he said.
