Syria to Host Major National Conference on Future Directions: Reports

Damascus, Dec 31 (NationPress) A national conference in Syria is slated to occur in Damascus on January 4 and 5, focusing on the nation’s future post the fall of the Assad government, according to multiple news reports.

The conference is anticipated to declare the disbandment of all armed factions, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, headed by Ahmed al-Sharaa, who was instrumental in the ousting of the Assad regime on December 8, as reported by the Xinhua news agency citing the Turkish broadcaster A Haber.

This event will mark the first comprehensive national conference since the significant regime shift in the Arab nation. Organizers aim to invite approximately 1,200 Syrians from both the domestic and diaspora communities, alongside an additional 70 to 100 representatives from each province, encompassing a variety of social groups, as per media sources.

The conference is also set to form a constitutional drafting committee and propose the establishment of a new government within a month. Participants will include representatives from youth organizations, women’s groups, religious leaders, and civil society.

A preparatory committee will be constituted for this upcoming national conference.

As of now, the Syrian interim administration, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, has not released any formal statements regarding the conference.

In a different development, on December 30, Syria's interim administration appointed Maysaa Sabrine as the governor of the nation's central bank.

Sabrine, who holds a master’s degree in accounting, previously served as the first deputy to the governor before her new appointment, as reported by SANA.

She has been with the bank since October 2018, when she took on the role of director of the Government Commission, the report indicates.

Additionally, she led the bank's oversight division and represented it on the board of the Damascus Securities Exchange beginning in December 2018, as stated.

No further information has been disclosed regarding Sabrine’s future policies. Nonetheless, her appointment signifies a significant advancement for female representation within the financial sector of Syria's evolving political framework.

A military coalition headed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham launched a significant military campaign from northern Syria on November 27. This operation moved southward, capturing the capital Damascus, and resulted in the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad's regime within 12 days.
