Dushanbe, March 3 (NationPress) Preliminary findings indicate that Tajikistan's ruling People's Democratic Party has emerged victorious in the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, securing 51.9 percent of the votes, as announced by Bakhtiyor Khudoyorzoda, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), on Monday.
The ruling party, under the leadership of President Emomali Rahmon, obtained 12 out of the 22 seats available on party lists and 37 seats in 41 single-mandate constituencies, as per the election commission's report.
Among the 22 seats on party lists, the Agrarian Party secured five seats, the Economic Reform Party obtained three seats, while both the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party each claimed one seat.
A total of 68 candidates from political parties contested for the 22 out of 63 seats in the lower house, while the remaining 41 seats were elected from 152 candidates spread across 41 constituencies, as reported by Xinhua.
The voting process commenced at 6 AM local time (0100 GMT) and concluded at 8 PM (1500 GMT3,513 polling stations established nationwide, along with 36 overseas polling stations, according to the commission.
A total of 220 candidates, including representatives from six political parties and some independents, vied for 63 seats in the lower house.
President Emomali Rahmon, who leads the ruling People's Democratic Party, cast his vote on Sunday morning at polling station No. 15 in Dushanbe.
According to information released by Tajikistan's CEC, there are currently over five million registered voters in the country.
Out of all 63 seats in the lower house, 41 seats are filled from 152 candidates across 41 constituencies, while the remaining 22 seats are contested by 68 candidates nominated by the six participating parties.
