Bangkok, Dec 8 (NationPress) The Thai Army announced on Monday the deployment of fighter jets as a countermeasure to recent Cambodian assaults that resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and injuries to four others. A Cambodian defense spokesperson reported that Thai troops opened fire on Cambodian armed forces for the second consecutive day, indicating that Cambodia refrained from retaliatory action.
According to the Thai Army Spokesperson Winthai Suvaree, the incident took place at approximately 07:00 a.m. local time in the Chong Bok region of Nam Yuen District, where Thai soldiers faced attacks involving 'supporting fire weapons,' leading to the five casualties.
This deadly confrontation followed an earlier skirmish in the nearby Chong An Ma area at around 05:05 a.m., when Cambodian forces initiated fire using small arms and indirect weapons, prompting the Thai side to respond according to engagement protocols, as stated by the Thai Army.
In light of the casualties and what it deemed a 'direct threat to national security,' the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) confirmed the initiation of air operations targeting Cambodian military infrastructure.
'These developments necessitated the deployment of air power to deter and minimize Cambodia's military capabilities to an essential level for national security and civilian protection,' stated RTAF Spokesperson Jackkrit Thammavichai.
On the same day, Cambodian Defense Ministry's Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata reported that at around 05:04 a.m., Thai military forces attacked Cambodian troops in the An Ses area of Preah Vihear province, according to Xinhua news agency.
'Following this, they continued firing multiple shots using tanks at Tamoan Thom temple, 5 Makara near Preah Vihear temple, and the Chomka Chek area,' she added.
'It is important to note that this attack came after the Thai forces conducted numerous provocative actions over several days, particularly yesterday's incident in the Prorlean Thmar area, aimed at instigating confrontations,' Socheata remarked.
She emphasized that Cambodia 'did not retaliate at all during the two assaults' and is continuing to monitor the situation closely, adhering to the spirit of 'respecting all previous agreements and resolving conflicts peacefully according to international law.'
Moreover, Cambodia has informed the ASEAN Observer Team regarding this incident and plans to request an investigation into the matter, she stated.
