Road safety remains a significant concern in conflict-ridden Afghanistan, with frequent accidents attributed to poor road conditions, reckless driving behavior, and insufficient safety measures, all exacerbated by the nation’s challenging landscape and limited infrastructure.
Earlier, on January 31, the provincial police reported that three commuters died and two were injured following a road accident in Baghlan province, also in northern Afghanistan.
This devastating incident occurred when two speeding vehicles collided in the Qala-e-Baday area of the Dushi district, leading to the deaths of three passengers, including a woman and a child, and injuring two others.
Additionally, on January 29, another tragic accident in Badakhshan province resulted in two fatalities and one injury when a vehicle veered off a mountainous road and fell into a ravine.
In December of the previous year, a bus overturned in the Salang region of Baghlan province, claiming the lives of at least five individuals and injuring 44 others, according to official reports.
The Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) in Afghanistan disclosed that the accident occurred in the Shawal area, north of Salang, around 2 a.m. local time on December 20, as per local media outlet Pajhwok Afghan News.
Spokesperson Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas mentioned that the overturning of the passenger bus was due to reckless driving, resulting in five fatalities and numerous injuries, with the injured being transported to the Khanjan district health center.
The ministry has urged travelers along this route to follow the guidelines provided by officials and maintain traffic safety. Authorities also mentioned that snow-clearing operations were taking place at various spots along the Salang highway.
