Washington, Feb 24 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump stated that it is in Russia's “interest” to reach an agreement and conclude the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, expressing his belief that President Vladimir Putin is indeed open to negotiation.

During a joint press conference, France’s Emmanuel Macron highlighted the necessity of security guarantees in any potential settlement aimed at ending the war.

The leaders convened at the White House on the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Earlier, the United States diverged from its European partners by voting against a UN General Assembly resolution that condemned Russia's actions as aggressive.

“It is very much to Russia's advantage to reach a deal, and I believe we can achieve that,” President Trump remarked at the press conference while addressing concerns about trusting President Putin. He acknowledged the deep-seated distrust that exists on both sides.

President Trump indicated that one of his initial communications post-inauguration was with President Putin, whom he believes is prepared to negotiate. He reiterated that it is in Russia’s best interest to finalize an agreement and for President Putin to continue leading Russia positively.

The American leader also expressed his eagerness to finalize a deal with Ukraine that would grant the US rights to rare earth minerals in exchange for the substantial security aid provided to help Ukraine defend against Russian aggression.

President Macron, who visited Washington DC following discussions with European allies, emphasized the importance of “checked and verified” security guarantees in any peace accord with Russia.

“I believe it is crucial to pursue peace,” President Macron stated in English, which is not his native language. “However, my key point was to secure an initial agreement that can be assessed, verified, and ensure that sufficient short-term guarantees are in place.”

He further added: “Many of my European colleagues are prepared to engage, but we require American support, as this is essential to the credibility of our security guarantees and our collective deterrence capacity.”
