Washington, Aug 2 (NationPress) - In a surprising turn of events, US President Donald Trump revealed that he has instructed the dismissal of Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Trump claimed McEntarfer manipulated data for political gain.
"I have just learned that our nation's 'Jobs Numbers' are being generated by a Biden appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, who allegedly fabricated the Jobs Numbers prior to the Election to enhance Kamala Harris' chances of winning," Trump stated in a post on Truth Social, although he did not provide any supporting evidence.
"Accurate Jobs Numbers are essential. I have directed my team to terminate this Biden political appointee, IMMEDIATELY... Crucial figures such as these must be unbiased and precise; they cannot be manipulated for political agendas," he continued.
This announcement followed the BLS's release of the July jobs report, which indicated a mere 73,000 nonfarm jobs were created—significantly below expectations—and included downward revisions of over 250,000 jobs for May and June combined, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
In July 2023, then-President Joe Biden appointed McEntarfer, and she was confirmed by the Senate in January 2024 with considerable bipartisan support.
"This is a clear-cut political dismissal, with no rationale regarding performance or qualifications," stated Gary Hufbauer, a nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and a former Treasury Department official, in an interview with Xinhua.
"Moving forward, it's expected that BLS staff will resist significant interference with data collection and reporting. However, Trump's appointee may still present statements in a manner that favors Trump," Hufbauer added.
