Trump launches America250 campaign marking 250 years of US independence
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
US President Donald Trump has launched a year-long nationwide campaign — dubbed America250 — to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, with the White House pledging a sweeping programme of patriotic events, restoration of national landmarks, and renewed investment in historic sites across the country. The initiative formally kicked off over the Independence Day weekend and will run through July 2027, when the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
What the Campaign Involves
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, whose department is overseeing much of the federal effort, described the Independence Day weekend celebrations as merely the opening act. 'We had an incredible celebration, and this is the kickoff of a celebration year,' Burgum said in interviews with CNN's State of the Union and ABC's This Week.
The campaign combines large-scale patriotic events with an ambitious restoration programme targeting monuments, memorials, and public spaces — particularly across the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Burgum said the administration's overarching goal was to make the capital 'safe and beautiful' before the peak of commemorative visits.
Restoration Work Across Washington
According to Burgum, the administration has already restored 48 monuments and 22 fountains — many of which had not functioned for years — and cleared more than 1,000 graffiti sites from federal property. 'Everybody that lives in Washington, D.C., says the place has never looked better,' he said.
A centrepiece of the restoration effort is the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which Burgum said had been leaking approximately 45,000 gallons of water daily before repairs commenced. 'The Reflecting Pool was part of the original design of the Lincoln Memorial,' he said. 'It's part of one of the monuments that is important to us as a country.'
The renovation has not been without controversy. Sections of the newly installed liner were reportedly damaged, prompting the Justice Department to pursue vandalism charges against one individual. Burgum rejected suggestions that the restoration had failed, maintaining that the major structural problems had been resolved and that the remaining damage represented a small fraction of the overall project.
National Parks and Deferred Maintenance
Beyond the capital, Burgum said the administration intends to extend restoration efforts to national parks and public lands across the country, pointing to the Great American Outdoors Act as a vehicle to address long-standing maintenance backlogs. 'We do have deferred maintenance across our national parks,' he acknowledged. 'We can get after restoring things on our national parks across the country.'
Political and Civic Significance
Burgum framed the anniversary as an opportunity for national unity, arguing that the milestone should bring Americans together around founding ideals regardless of political differences. 'We can be an exceptional nation because our ideals are exceptional,' he said. 'What we saw this week is people unifying around our country, unifying around the flag.'
The America250 initiative is described as one of the signature domestic projects of Trump's second term. Federal agencies, alongside state governments, museums, historical institutions, and civic organisations, are expected to host commemorative events throughout the coming year leading up to the formal anniversary in July 2027.
