Tel Aviv, Oct 13 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump referred to Monday as a great and beautiful day as 20 Israeli hostages were released from Hamas captivity earlier, aligning with his Gaza peace initiative. Trump visited Israel's Knesset, where he inscribed his thoughts in the guestbook.
"This is my great honour. A great and beautiful day, a new beginning," he wrote using a thick black Sharpie.
President Trump plans to meet with the families of the hostages and is set to address the Knesset, marking him as the fourth US president to do so.
The release of all 20 hostages occurred earlier in the day, facilitated by Hamas in Gaza.
Speaking to reporters at the Knesset, Trump reiterated that the conflict in Gaza had concluded.
"This is a great day. This is a whole new beginning, and I think there has never been an event like it. The love in the streets has just been incredible," the Times of Israel reported Trump stating.
When queried about potential repercussions for Hamas should they disobey the ceasefire, he replied, "They'll comply."
Regarding the hostages, he expressed, "We're so happy for them. They're going to be happy and will lead great lives. They've shown tremendous bravery."
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog greeted Trump upon his arrival at Ben-Gurion International Airport.
Before departing, Trump described the visit as a special time.
"This is going to be a very special time... There are 500,000 people celebrating yesterday and today in Israel. Additionally, Muslim and Arab nations are joining in the cheer. Everyone is in harmony, which has never happened before. Typically, one group cheers while another does not. This is a first, and it’s a privilege to be a part of it; we're poised for an extraordinary experience," he stated.
