Tsunami Alert Issued Following 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake in Japan

Tokyo, Jan 13 (NationPress) On Monday evening, Japan issued a warning regarding a potential tsunami after an earthquake registering approximately 6.9 magnitude hit the southwestern part of the nation.

The quake, which occurred at 9:19 pm, was recorded at a lower 5 on Japan's seismic scale of 7 in certain areas of Miyazaki Prefecture, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

In response, the agency released a tsunami advisory for both Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures.

According to Japan Times, "The epicenter of the quake was located at a depth of 30 km in the Hyuganada Sea. Following the seismic event, the agency quickly issued a tsunami advisory for the coasts of Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures, predicting wave heights of up to 1 meter. Residents in the affected areas are advised to maintain distance from the coastline and seek higher ground."

Meanwhile, China's Xinhua news agency reported a 5.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Dingri County in the Xigaze region of the Xizang Autonomous Region at 8:58 pm on Monday (Beijing Time).

The China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC) indicated that the quake's epicenter was tracked at 28.45 degrees north latitude and 87.52 degrees east longitude.

This earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, as per the CENC report.

A memorial service was also conducted on Monday in honor of the victims of the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that affected Dingri County in Tibet last week.

At 9:30 am, sirens echoed through Chamco Township, where the memorial was held. A large banner, featuring white Mandarin and Tibetan characters, stating "deeply mourning" the deceased from the Dingri earthquake, was displayed in the township square.

Numerous attendees, including government officials, rescue personnel, and local residents, removed their hats and observed a moment of silence for three minutes in remembrance of those lost.

At resettlement areas, traditional Tibetan butter lamps were lit in some temporary homes, symbolizing mourning for relatives and friends.

The powerful earthquake that struck Dingri on January 7, near the northern base camp of Mount Qomolangma, resulted in the loss of 126 lives.

Monday marked the seventh day following the quake, a significant day for Buddhist rituals in honor of the deceased.
