Hanoi, July 24 (NationPress) Typhoon Wipha has tragically resulted in the deaths of three individuals, one person remains unaccounted for, and five others have sustained injuries in Vietnam, according to a report from the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority on Thursday.
Among the deceased, two individuals were swept away by floodwaters in the central province of Nghe An, while another lost their life due to a landslide in the same area.
The storm has caused significant destruction, damaging approximately 720 homes and submerging 3,848 others throughout northern and central Vietnam.
Nghe An emerged as the most affected province, with over 9,000 households facing extended power outages, as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.
On July 22, the typhoon made landfall in coastal regions between Hung Yen and Ninh Binh, packing winds of up to 88 km/h, classified as levels 8-9 on the Beaufort scale, with gusts reaching up to level 11, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
At around 8:30 a.m., a suspension bridge in Dien Bien province partially collapsed due to ongoing heavy rainfall, injuring four individuals, reported the Voice of Vietnam.
Power outages were also noted in areas of Tien Hai commune in Hung Yen province, as per Xinhua news agency.
Meanwhile, central provinces like Thanh Hoa and Nghe An experienced rainfall ranging from 150 to 200 mm, increasing the risks of landslides and flash floods, local officials cautioned.
Previously, on July 21, one fatality and four injuries were reported in central Vietnam's Nghe An province due to Typhoon Wipha, as stated by local newspaper Lao Dong (Labor) on Monday.
The impact of Typhoon Wipha, which is the third tropical storm to hit Vietnam this year, has led to damage to 357 houses and the inundation of over 400 hectares of rice fields and other crops across the province, the report added.
