Is Ukraine Prepared for an Agreement to Achieve Real Peace?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kyiv, Feb 15 (NationPress) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed Ukraine's readiness for an agreement that could establish genuine peace during his address in Munich, Germany, according to the Ukrinform news agency.
"Ukraine is prepared for an agreement that will bring real peace for us, for Ukraine, and for Europe," he stated at the Munich Security Conference, emphasizing that the crisis can be resolved with dignity, which he described as the most crucial aspect for Ukrainians.
Zelensky pointed out that Europe is largely absent from the negotiation discussions, labeling this as a significant oversight. He emphasized that Ukrainians are striving to fully involve Europe in the negotiation process to ensure that Europe's interests and voice are acknowledged, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
He pledged that Ukraine would make every effort to ensure the success of the negotiations and maintain ongoing communication with representatives from the United States.
In contrast, Russia has indicated its willingness to pursue a negotiated resolution to the Ukraine crisis based on prior agreements made by the leaders of Russia and the United States, as stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier this month.
Lavrov reaffirmed Russia's commitment to the outcomes of the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump, which took place in Anchorage, Alaska, in August of last year. He also expressed that Moscow expects its interests to be fully considered in the pursuit of mutually acceptable agreements with partners who are open to honest and direct dialogue.
He added that Russia would continue to advocate for truth and justice in international relations and foster a multipolar world aligned with the principles of the UN Charter. Lavrov also mentioned that Russia would oppose double standards, hidden agendas, imposed settlement formulas, and the practices of neocolonialism and hegemonism.
Moreover, the foreign minister highlighted that Russia would focus on strengthening strategic partnerships with emerging centers of a multipolar world, indicating that Russia and its like-minded partners would work to accelerate the creation of sanctions-resistant mechanisms for trade, investment, financial, and logistical cooperation.
