United Nations, June 25 (NationPress) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his approval of US President Donald Trump's announcement regarding a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, as stated by a UN spokesperson.
Guterres urged both nations to completely adhere to the ceasefire and cease hostilities, emphasizing that the citizens of both countries have already endured immense suffering, according to Stephane Dujarric, Guterres' spokesman.
"The secretary-general is optimistic that this ceasefire could serve as a model for resolving other conflicts in the region," the spokesman remarked on Tuesday.
Earlier that day, President Trump confirmed that a ceasefire between Iran and Israel is now in effect and called on both sides to exercise restraint.
"THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!" Trump shared on the social media platform Truth Social.
The announcement arrived amidst rising tensions in the Middle East, although Trump’s declaration appeared to surprise both parties. Iran quickly contradicted the ceasefire claim, asserting that it had not received any official proposal from Washington and had not consented to a mutual ceasefire.
Earlier, President Trump stated, "Israel & Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, 'Peace'! I recognized the moment was NOW. The World, and the Middle East, are the real victors!"
"Both Nations stand to gain immense love, peace, and prosperity in their futures. They have so much to gain, yet so much to lose if they deviate from the path of righteousness and truth. The future for Israel & Iran is boundless and filled with great promise. God bless you both!" he concluded.
Earlier, Iran announced a unilateral suspension of its military operations against Israel, effective at 4 a.m. local time. However, it clarified that this pause was conditional on whether Israel would halt its airstrikes and military actions.
