UN Envoy Optimistic About Syria's Quick Recovery Post-Assad

Damascus, Dec 15 (NationPress) UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen announced on Sunday that the UN is attentively tracking the rapidly changing situation in the country and is eagerly awaiting the next phases of a political transition following the removal of former President Bashar al-Assad on December 8.

While addressing reporters in Damascus, Pedersen highlighted the necessity for Syrian state institutions to fully restore their functions under secure conditions, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

"We are collaborating with all factions of the Syrian populace ... and we wish to see no instances of revenge. Instead, it is crucial that institutions resume operations, supported by the essential security measures," he remarked.

The UN envoy expressed optimism that the lifting of sanctions on Syria would be expedited, facilitating a quick commencement of the nation's economic recovery.

"We hope to witness a swift termination of sanctions so that the recovery process can initiate promptly," Pedersen added.

Recognizing the intricacies of the political environment, Pedersen urged all factions to maintain tranquility, concentrate on rehabilitation, and prioritize the well-being of ordinary Syrians. He affirmed the UN's dedication to fostering a stable and inclusive transition that prevents further violence and ensures a brighter future for the nation.

On Sunday, a number of students began returning to classrooms in the Syrian capital for the first time since December 8. Universities also reopened their doors, with some administrative personnel and faculty members returning to their workplaces.

The recommencement of classes and academic activities, though limited, signifies a gradual return to daily life following a phase of turmoil.
