Tripoli, Feb 18 (NationPress) The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has declared an urgent need for $106.6 million to provide assistance to Sudanese refugees residing in Libya.
In an official statement, the UN refugee agency stated that the allocated funds will aid 375,000 Sudanese refugees, 70,000 individuals in host communities, and 1,000 third-country nationals.
The financial support is intended to deliver vital assistance, ranging from immediate relief to long-term solutions, according to the UNHCR.
“This initiative is a vital measure to guarantee that refugees receive protection, healthcare, and fundamental dignity,” noted Aeneas Chuma, the deputy special representative of the UN Secretary-General, who is also the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya.
The UNHCR reports that over 240,000 Sudanese refugees have fled to Libya since the onset of the Sudanese conflict in mid-April 2023. Despite ongoing humanitarian efforts, Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers in Libya continue to confront severe protection threats and pressing humanitarian needs, such as shelter, clean water, hygiene, healthcare, and food, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
The United Nations has initiated a $6 billion humanitarian appeal to support nearly 26 million Sudanese affected by the current conflict, both within Sudan and in neighboring nations, as per a statement from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Sudan has been embroiled in a catastrophic conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023, leading to over 29,683 reported fatalities by the close of 2024, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data, a crisis monitoring entity. However, numerous research organizations indicate that the actual death toll may be significantly higher.
