Beirut, Jan 17 (NationPress) UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stated that his office is prepared to enhance human rights initiatives in Lebanon and emphasized the need for investment in the rule of law within the nation.

"My office is ready to bolster our human rights efforts and to support the country as it progresses," he remarked on Thursday during a press conference in Beirut, as reported by the United Nations Information Center.

Turk expressed his commitment to aiding essential reforms that are crucial for fortifying the rule of law, ensuring the independence of the judiciary, and enhancing the transparency of its operations during his discussions with the newly appointed Lebanese president and prime minister-designate, according to the Xinhua news agency.

"I appreciate the President's public pledge to uphold equality, justice, and protection for all while respecting liberties, free press, and expression," he added.

Turk pointed out that with new leadership in Lebanon, there exists an opportunity for political stability, economic recovery, and the long-awaited execution of necessary reforms to tackle the various socio-economic crises and significant disparities facing Lebanon.

"Human rights serve as a governance tool. This was a strong message I shared," he remarked.

Turk also advocated for an independent inquiry into the Beirut port explosion that occurred in August 2020. "I reiterate that those accountable for this tragedy must face justice, and I extend the support of my office in this matter," he stated.

Furthermore, Turk insisted on upholding the rights of all Lebanese, particularly the vulnerable populations.

The rights of all Lebanese, especially the vulnerable, should be central to economic, fiscal, and financial strategies. This embodies what a human rights economy entails. Budgeting and investment choices must prioritize access to education, healthcare, and social protection," he concluded.
