Washington, Jan 6 (NationPress) On Monday, the US Congress will formally acknowledge President-elect Donald Trump's triumph in the November 2024 election, peacefully concluding a ceremonial process that his supporters unsuccessfully attempted to thwart in 2020, fueled by the erroneous belief that he had been unjustly defeated.
On this snowy day, Vice-President Kamala Harris will oversee the proceedings, which significantly symbolize her own defeat as the Democratic Party nominee against Trump.
Four years earlier, on this same date, Trump's supporters stormed the US Capitol, where both chambers of Congress convened to validate Joe Biden's election as President, who had decisively won over the then-incumbent President. They aimed to halt that certification process.
During that chaotic event, rioters took control of the Capitol as lawmakers sought refuge wherever possible. Tragically, five individuals lost their lives in the aftermath, including one who was shot by law enforcement and another who died from unrelated causes.
President-elect Trump had previously ignored several established customs of presidential transition. Unlike past Presidents, he did not extend an invitation to Biden for a customary visit to the White House — a gesture observed by President Barack Obama, his predecessor, and President Biden during his own transition.
Additionally, he departed for Mar-a-Lago in Florida instead of attending Biden's inauguration ceremony.
Trump never publicly recognized his loss.
In a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump made no reference to the upcoming congressional event, stating, "Biden is doing everything possible to make the TRANSITION as difficult as possible, from Lawfare such as has never been seen before, to costly and ridiculous Executive Orders on the Green New Scam and other money wasting Hoaxes. Fear not, these 'Orders' will all be terminated shortly, and we will become a Nation of Common Sense and Strength. MAGA!!!"
President-elect Trump is set to take the oath of office on January 20, with President Biden confirming his intention to attend the ceremony.
