Is the US Considering Reopening Its Embassy in Venezuela?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Jan 9 (NationPress) The United States has initiated an on-site evaluation in Caracas as it contemplates the potential reopening of its embassy in Venezuela, even while American officials continue to caution that the nation's security environment remains “fluid” and perilous for US citizens.
“As President Trump indicated, we are preparing for a reopening should the President decide to proceed,” a senior State Department representative mentioned earlier, indicating that the administration is carefully considering its next steps.
On Thursday, US diplomatic and security teams traveled to the Venezuelan capital to commence this process.
“On January 9, US diplomatic and security personnel from the VAU, including Charge d’Affaires John T. McNamara, went to Caracas to perform an initial evaluation for a potential phased resumption of operations,” a US official stated.
This assessment comes alongside a recent security alert issued by the US Embassy in Caracas, which advised US citizens against traveling to Venezuela and urged increased caution for those already present.
In its statement, the embassy highlighted that Venezuela remains under the most severe US Travel Advisory classification due to “significant risks to Americans,” which include wrongful detention, crime, civil unrest, and limited healthcare access.
The embassy also pointed out that no commercial flights are currently available in or out of Venezuela, making travel and evacuation options for foreign nationals even more challenging.
It reiterated that the U.S. Department of State withdrew all diplomatic personnel from Caracas in March 2019 and halted embassy operations, leaving all consular services—both routine and emergency—unavailable.
“The US government remains unable to provide emergency services to US citizens in Venezuela,” the embassy noted.
US citizens currently in the country were advised to take safety precautions, establish various communication methods with family and friends outside Venezuela, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for security updates.
Those in need of assistance were instructed to reach out to the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, Colombia, which oversees Venezuela-related consular affairs.
Since 2019, the US has not had an operational embassy in Caracas following the withdrawal of diplomatic staff amid escalating political turmoil and deteriorating security conditions.
