Washington, Jan 11 (NationPress) The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs issued a warning on Saturday stating that with the resumption of international flights, U.S. citizens currently in Venezuela are urged to depart the country immediately.
The bureau highlighted in a post on X that the security landscape in Venezuela remains volatile, pointing out reports of armed militia groups, known as colectivos, establishing roadblocks and searching vehicles for indications of U.S. citizenship or support.
U.S. nationals are encouraged to stay alert and exercise caution when traveling by road, as well as to keep an eye on updates from airlines' communications and websites, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
Venezuela holds the highest Travel Advisory level -- Level 4: Do Not Travel -- due to significant risks to Americans, which include wrongful detention, torture, terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary law enforcement, crime, civil unrest, and inadequate health infrastructure.
Recently, the United States initiated a major military operation against Venezuela, occurring in the early hours of January 3, which successfully apprehended Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse. This military action has provoked considerable global condemnation and concern.
In another development, President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that he anticipates meeting representatives of Venezuela's current government soon, suggesting a potential diplomatic thaw following recent U.S. actions and a shift in bilateral relations.
While addressing reporters, Trump mentioned that discussions with Venezuelan officials could occur shortly, although no specific date has been established.
“I will be meeting with various representatives of Venezuela, probably pretty soon,” Trump stated.
He further noted that the dynamics between Washington and the current Venezuelan leadership have significantly improved.
“The relationship that we have with the people that are currently running Venezuela is very good,” Trump added.
Trump emphasized that the U.S. is engaging directly with Venezuelan authorities to prevent further escalation.
“We’re dealing with the people from Venezuela,” he remarked. “We’re dealing with them very well.”
He suggested that the recent U.S. military actions and pressure have provided leverage that mitigates the potential for further conflict.
