Washington, April 19 (NationPress) The US has reissued a travel advisory for its citizens, urging them to reconsider travel to Bangladesh due to civil unrest, crime, and terrorism under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

The advisory highlights the risk of terrorist violence, including attacks and other activities within Bangladesh, as stated by the US Department of State on Friday.

It specifically cautions against traveling to Khagrachari, Rangamati, and Bandarban Hill Tracts districts, collectively known as the Chittagong Hill Tracts, due to communal violence, crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and other security threats.

“The region has seen kidnappings, some stemming from domestic or familial disputes, and others targeting members of religious minorities. Additionally, separatist groups and political violence represent further dangers for visitors, including instances of IED explosions and active shootings,” the advisory explained.

Travelers are advised that prior approval from the Government of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Home Affairs Office of Public Safety is necessary for visiting these areas. Due to the associated risks, US government employees are barred from traveling to this region.

As per the advisory, non-essential travel by US government employees within Dhaka outside the diplomatic enclave is discouraged due to safety concerns. Special authorization is required for any travel outside Dhaka.

The US government may have limited capacity to provide emergency services to its citizens in Bangladesh, particularly outside Dhaka, owing to these travel restrictions, inadequate infrastructure, and limited local emergency response resources, the advisory noted.

US citizens are urged to steer clear of demonstrations and political gatherings, as what may start as peaceful protests can rapidly escalate into violence.

“Travelers should remain vigilant against petty crime, such as pickpocketing, especially in crowded areas. Moreover, serious crimes like muggings, burglaries, assaults, and illegal drug trafficking are prevalent in major cities across Bangladesh,” it added.
