Moscow, Sep 12 (NationPress) Russia asserted on Friday that the United States, under President Donald Trump, possesses every opportunity to sway Kyiv into addressing the fundamental issues fueling the conflict in Ukraine.
During a routine media briefing in Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova expressed, "We firmly believe that the present American administration can motivate the so-called Ukrainian leadership to bring an end to the conflict, tackle the underlying causes of its emergence, and revert to the foundations of its own statehood."
According to Zakharova, as reported by the state-run news agency Tass, "the most effective guarantees for Ukraine's security are the establishment of its neutral, non-aligned, non-nuclear status, as outlined in the declaration of state sovereignty from 1990."
She emphasized that it was under this status that Ukraine achieved independence and gained recognition from the international community, including Russia.
Zakharova highlighted that the confirmation of this declaration was included in the draft peace agreement developed in the spring of 2022. "Let me remind you, this framework was agreeable to the Kyiv regime. However, due to pressure from the British, they chose to abandon negotiations," she stated.
“I have yet to hear from any current figure that the declaration of state sovereignty from 1990 was adopted under duress or with any reservations. They have consistently taken pride in this document. Hence, this represents the origin of their statehood. This is what secures Ukraine's safety and can serve as the cornerstone for future peace. This is what we must advocate for. Whoever does this is truly commendable,” the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry remarked.
