Ottawa, June 16 (NationPress) Several global leaders have arrived at the breathtaking Canadian Rockies for the Group of Seven (G7) Summit, which is taking place against a backdrop of rising tensions in the Middle East.

The G7 leaders engaged in a 90-minute session in Kananaskis, Canada, to evaluate the global economic landscape, followed by a working lunch that centered on energy security with invited dignitaries.

On Sunday, the leaders revealed a streamlined agenda that emphasizes discussions on the global economy and energy security.

The G7, an informal coalition of seven advanced economies—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, and the United States—along with the European Union, provides a platform for coordinating responses to significant global challenges.

The leaders attending this two-day summit include US President Donald Trump, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Australian PM Anthony Albanese, Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba, and British PM Keir Starmer, among others.

In the lead-up to the Summit, President Macron reaffirmed France and the EU's commitment to Greenland's autonomy and Denmark's sovereignty. He criticized the US for its repeated claims regarding Greenland, labeling them as “wrong”.

“It is wrong when the United States keeps expressing a wish to take over Greenland,” Macron stated during a press conference in Nuuk with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

He emphasized that “Greenland cannot be bought or taken,” directly countering past remarks made by the US President amidst renewed geopolitical interest in the Arctic.

On the sidelines of the Summit, Italian Prime Minister Meloni met with Chancellor Merz to discuss developments in the Middle East and the Ukraine conflict. “During the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, I met with the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Friedrich Merz. We confirmed our joint will to hold a new Intergovernmental Summit between Italy and Germany in Rome in early 2026, while also coordinating on essential EU issues like irregular immigration and competitiveness,” Meloni posted on X.

British PM Keir Starmer also met with Meloni on Sunday evening, emphasizing the need for restraint and de-escalation in the Middle East. A statement from his office highlighted the leaders' agreement on the severe human and economic toll from rising oil prices.

“This Summit comes at a critical moment for the world,” the statement concluded, indicating that G7 partners must pursue diplomatic solutions. They reiterated unwavering support for Ukraine, indicating it as a key topic for the discussions ahead.

Canadian PM Mike Carney, the host of this year's summit, has extended invitations to leaders from several non-G7 nations, including Ukraine, Australia, India, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa.
