Did Trump Just Share Private Messages from Macron and Rutte About Greenland?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Jan 20 (NationPress) On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump released screenshots that appeared to be private messages exchanged with his French colleague Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
In his message, Macron expressed confusion over Trump's actions regarding Greenland and proposed a G7 meeting in Paris right after the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday afternoon.
Macron also conveyed his backing for Trump's initiatives in Syria and suggested collaboration on Iran.
The message from Macron stated, "My friend, we are completely aligned on Syria. We can achieve significant results on Iran. I do not grasp what you are attempting with Greenland."
"I can arrange a G7 gathering in Paris after Davos on Thursday afternoon. I can extend invitations to the Ukrainians, the Danes, the Syrians, and the Russians on the sidelines. Let’s have dinner together in Paris before your return to the US," he continued.
While posting the screenshot on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, "Note from President Emmanuel Macron of France."
Earlier on Monday, Trump declared a 200 percent tariff on French wines and champagnes after Paris criticized the US stance on Greenland.
"I will impose a 200 percent tariff on his wines and champagnes. He can join, but he doesn’t have to," Trump remarked.
In another Truth Social post, Trump shared a screenshot of what seemed to be a private message from Mark Rutte.
Rutte commended Trump for his accomplishments in Syria and expressed a desire to find a resolution regarding Greenland.
The message from Rutte stated, "Mr. President, dear Donald – what you achieved in Syria today is remarkable. I will leverage my media opportunities in Davos to spotlight your accomplishments there, in Gaza, and in Ukraine. I am dedicated to discovering a path forward concerning Greenland. Looking forward to seeing you."
While sharing this message on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "Thank you to Mark Rutte, the NATO Secretary General!"
On Monday, Trump increased pressure on Denmark regarding Greenland, accusing Copenhagen of not addressing what he called a longstanding Russian threat to the strategically significant island and exhibiting renewed determination to take action.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump commented, "NATO has been informing Denmark for 20 years that 'you must mitigate the Russian threat near Greenland.' Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to respond adequately. Now it’s time, and it will be done!"
This post has become a focal point in an escalating diplomatic conflict between Washington and several European capitals, particularly following Trump's recent announcement of punitive tariffs related to Greenland.
Since his return to office in 2025, Trump has consistently stated his aim to "acquire" Greenland, citing security concerns and geopolitical rivalries in the Arctic.
Greenland, recognized as the world's largest island, is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, although Copenhagen maintains control over defense and foreign relations.
The United States already operates a significant military installation on the island, which has gained increasing strategic relevance due to the rising global interest in the Arctic region.
