Did Yemen's government hand over 26 Houthi bodies as a gesture of goodwill ahead of talks?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Sanaa, December 6 (NationPress) The Yemeni government announced the transfer of 26 bodies belonging to the Houthi group as an act of "goodwill" in anticipation of the forthcoming negotiations facilitated by the United Nations.
According to a statement aired on state-run television, the transfer occurred on Friday, where the bodies were delivered to a local mediator, with supervision from the International Committee of the Red Cross, as reported by Xinhua.
The government indicated that these remains correspond to Houthi members who lost their lives in recent skirmishes in the northeastern provinces of Marib and al-Jawf, situated to the east and northeast of the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa.
The state-run Saba news agency noted that the transfer of remains was executed after the Houthi faction verified their identities through a mediator.
Yahya Kazman, the head of the government's negotiation committee, expressed that this unilateral action aims to showcase goodwill in progressing towards resolving issues regarding detainees, abductees, and individuals who have been forcibly disappeared.
He highlighted that this gesture precedes a new series of discussions concerning detainees, which are set to occur in the coming days under the guidance of international collaborators.
The Houthi response to this gesture is still awaited.
Recently, UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg disclosed his participation in a mediation session in Muscat, hosted by Oman, indicating that peace conversations between the conflicting Yemeni factions are likely to resume shortly.
Earlier, the Yemeni government and the Houthi group successfully conducted a significant UN-mediated prisoner exchange in 2023, resulting in the release of around 900 detainees. A previous large-scale exchange took place in 2020, liberating nearly 1,000 prisoners from both sides.
Since late 2014, Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war, initiated when the Houthi group took control of vast regions, including the capital, Sanaa, compelling the internationally recognized government to relocate.
Since the announcement of a UN-mediated truce in April 2022, frontline confrontations have drastically decreased; however, a comprehensive political settlement remains elusive.
