Yoon Approves Resignation of Defence Minister Amid Martial Law Turmoil

Seoul, Dec 5 (NationPress) South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has approved the resignation of Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun, as stated by the Presidential office on Thursday, amid escalating controversy over his involvement in Yoon's failed martial law declaration.
Kim, who suggested the martial law declaration to Yoon, chose to resign on Wednesday after Yoon unexpectedly announced martial law on Tuesday night and revoked it a few hours later following the National Assembly's decision to nullify it, according to Yonhap news agency.
Yoon has put forward Choi Byung-huk, a retired four-star Army general who is currently serving as South Korea's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, as the nominee to replace Kim, as stated by Chung Jin-suk, Yoon's chief of staff, in a press briefing.
Chung characterized Choi, who held the position of deputy commander of the South Korea-US Combined Forces Command from 2019-2020, as a highly experienced military leader with a comprehensive understanding of national security and substantial field expertise.
The candidate is regarded as an appropriate choice to "execute the military's essential duties, including sustaining a strong readiness posture grounded in the solid South Korea-US alliance," Chung stated.
In South Korea, all ministers undergo a parliamentary confirmation procedure, though only the Prime Minister's appointment necessitates parliamentary endorsement.
Yoon's unexpected martial law declaration surprised the US, leading to concerns regarding the alliance at a time when security threats from North Korea are increasing, particularly with its strengthening military connections with Russia.
US officials expressed their approval of Yoon's decision to lift the martial law and reaffirmed their dedication to the alliance with South Korea.
