New Delhi, Oct 7 (NationPress) As the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur approaches at the end of this month, the Malaysian High Commissioner to India, Dato' Muzaffar Shah Mustafa, engaged with IANS to discuss the trade dynamics between the two nations and also addressed the controversial request for the extradition of Islamic preacher Zakir Naik.
"We maintain a bilateral extradition treaty with India, which involves a specific process. Currently, Zakir Naik's situation is subject to legal proceedings under the jurisdiction of a Malaysian court and will be resolved with judicial scrutiny. According to the rationale presented by the Indian government, there is no basis for extraditing Zakir Naik. This issue does not pertain to the Malaysian government," stated the High Commissioner.
On the bilateral relationship, he remarked, "Malaysia and India share a deep-rooted historical and cultural connection. Our relations are advancing positively, highlighted by the recent visit of the Malaysian Prime Minister to India, which marked a pivotal moment in reinforcing our partnerships. This is underscored by the elevation of our ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership."
Regarding the ASEAN Summit, he noted, "Malaysia is currently chairing ASEAN, and we place great significance on our leadership. The themes of inclusivity and sustainability are crucial not only for ASEAN but particularly for Malaysia. We eagerly anticipate the assembly of leaders from ASEAN member countries, including India, in Kuala Lumpur to deliberate on the future."
High Commissioner Mustafa added, "Malaysia is excited to welcome Prime Minister Modi during this summit. We recognize India as one of ASEAN's dialogue partners, and invitations have been extended to the leaders of all ASEAN dialogue partner nations."
Importantly, PM Modi is set to visit Malaysia for the 47th ASEAN Summit on October 26-27, with an invitation also extended to President Trump to attend the summit.
