Bhopal, Feb 25 (NationPress) Close to 100 female students at the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, located in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh's Anuppur district, became unwell after consuming 'contaminated' food from their hostel mess, as reported by officials on Tuesday.
Fortunately, none of the students are in critical condition. The resident doctors at the university's medical center have examined the affected students and provided them with initial treatment.
Anuppur District Magistrate Harshal Pancholi informed IANS via phone that a team, including the Chief Medical Officer and senior administrative personnel, visited the university campus. They collected food samples for testing to identify any fungal or other types of contamination. The students were interviewed, and an investigation into staff members is ongoing as a case has been registered.
He noted that the students mainly reported indigestion, and they received suitable treatment. A few other students with stomach troubles were referred to the medical facility for additional care.
The university and the medical team are actively monitoring the situation through continuous inspections and investigations, the District Magistrate stated.
A source from the campus shared with IANS that the students were served veg biryani on Sunday and may have requested it again the next day. The caterer complied by serving the same dish instead of discarding it, which led to numerous students experiencing headaches, stomach aches, and vomiting. The source added that the digestion problems were mainly among those girls who repeatedly requested the same veg biryani, while none of the male students who consumed it reported any adverse effects.
Currently, no one has been referred to a different hospital. The incident seems to be related to food infection, likely due to serving the same stale food. While some female students exhibited symptoms of food infection, most remain healthy and are staying in their hostels.
The university is home to five hostels: three for boys and two for girls, each with separate dining facilities but a shared kitchen.
