101 oxygen parks for Ahmedabad, 1.26 crore trees planned after Amit Shah review
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 27 June chaired a high-level review meeting in Ahmedabad that finalised plans to develop 101 oxygen parks across the city and launch a large-scale plantation drive spanning 308 locations in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency. The decisions form part of a wider green-cover expansion push targeting more than 1.26 crore trees across urban and semi-urban Gujarat.
What the Oxygen Parks Will Include
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has been tasked with developing all 101 oxygen parks, each to be equipped with walking tracks, lighting, signage, parking facilities, and children's play areas. Home Minister Shah directed that details of every park — including photographs, videos, and GPS coordinates — be consolidated on a single online platform for seamless public access.
Plantation Drive Across Gandhinagar Constituency
A coordinated plantation drive is scheduled for 12 July at 308 identified locations within the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency, involving administrative departments and public participation initiatives. The Forest Department alone has been assigned a target of planting over 60 lakh saplings and developing 82 green protection zones — designated as 'Van Kavach'.
Agency-Wise Targets and Responsibilities
The combined plantation target of over 1.26 crore trees has been distributed across multiple agencies. The AMC is expected to plant 31.43 lakh saplings in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency and 9 lakh in Ahmedabad district. Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation has a target of 6.27 lakh, Gandhinagar district 12.5 lakh, AUDA 4 lakh, GUDA 1.67 lakh, and GIDC 1 lakh.
Additionally, 121 organisations — comprising social groups, banks, and industries — have committed to planting and maintaining around 28.50 lakh trees. More than 2.33 lakh volunteers are expected to participate in the campaign.
Public Participation and 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0'
To broaden community involvement, households in tenements, row houses, and bungalows are to receive one free sapling each. The initiative is embedded within the national campaign 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0', under which institutions are also expected to contribute through corporate social responsibility commitments.
The meeting was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and senior officials including Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Das. With the plantation drive less than a fortnight away, the focus will now shift to on-ground coordination between agencies and the mobilisation of the volunteer network.
