Kolkata, April 10 (NationPress) A total of 11 Bills that were previously approved in the West Bengal Assembly during 2024 and 2025 are currently awaiting clearance, reserved for the consideration of the President of India.

This was disclosed in a clarification issued by the office of the West Bengal Governor, C.V. Ananda Bose, in response to assertions made by certain members of the ruling Trinamool Congress that numerous Bills passed in the Assembly are still pending clearance from Raj Bhavan in Kolkata.

The issue arose following a recent ruling by the Supreme Court, which overturned the Tamil Nadu Governor's decision to withhold Bills passed in their Assembly.

The Governor's office further indicated that out of the 11 Bills awaiting Presidential consideration, 10 pertain to matters concerning state universities, while one is the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Law) Bill, which proposes the death penalty for offenders in rape and murder cases.

This Bill was passed in the West Bengal Assembly in September of last year amidst widespread protests triggered by the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata in August.

In February of this year, a group of Trinamool Congress Parliamentarians, from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, met with President Droupadi Murmu to urge swift approval of the Aparajita Bill.

The Governor's office also dismissed claims that there were 22 Bills pending clearance from Raj Bhavan in 2023.

According to the statement, after review by the Governor's office, assent had been granted for five Bills, while two remain with the state government pending the information requested.

The Raj Bhavan statement emphasized that the office of the Governor has been diligent in adhering to constitutional protocols in handling all matters, including those related to the passage of Bills.
