Jharkhand: 15 cops suspended, 3 arrested over alleged rape at Gamharia police station
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
At least 15 police personnel have been suspended and three individuals arrested over the alleged rape of a woman inside the premises of Gamharia police station in Jharkhand's Saraikela Kharsawan district, in a case that has exposed serious institutional failures within the local police force. The incident, which reportedly took place on a Thursday night, came to light after the victim filed a written complaint.
The Incident
According to police, the woman — a resident of Dugdha village under the Gamharia police station jurisdiction — arrived at the station late Thursday night to file a complaint about a family dispute and alleged harassment by her husband. Given the late hour, she was advised to remain at the police station overnight.
It is alleged that during this period, wireless operator on duty Neeraj Lakra took the woman into a room within the police station premises and raped her. Following a written complaint by the victim, an FIR was lodged and Lakra was subsequently arrested.
Arrests and Suspensions
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case so far. Those taken into custody include the accused wireless operator Neeraj Lakra, the officer on duty, and the station clerk (munshi). All three have been remanded to judicial custody.
In two rounds of disciplinary action, a total of 15 police personnel have faced suspension. Superintendent of Police (SP) Manoj Swargiary suspended nine personnel on Sunday — comprising two Sub-Inspectors, four Assistant Sub-Inspectors, two Havildars, and one constable — for failing to report the incident to senior officers in a timely manner. Earlier, six personnel, including the Station House Officer (SHO), had been suspended for alleged gross misconduct and sexual misbehaviour.
SIT Formed, Evidence Preserved
The police administration constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by SDPO Anubhav Bhardwaj to conduct a formal inquiry. The SIT inspected the crime scene and sealed the room in question to preserve forensic evidence.
SP Manoj Swargiary personally visited Gamharia police station on Sunday to oversee the investigation. Police have stated that action will be taken against any additional officer whose role or negligence is established during the ongoing probe, in accordance with applicable rules.
Institutional Accountability Under Scrutiny
The case has drawn sharp attention to the conduct and oversight mechanisms at local police stations in Jharkhand. Notably, the secondary suspension of nine personnel was specifically for failing to alert the chain of command — suggesting that knowledge of the alleged assault may have been suppressed within the station for a period before it reached senior officers. This is not the first instance of alleged custodial sexual misconduct in India, and the pattern of institutional silence that often precedes public disclosure continues to be a concern for rights observers. The investigation is ongoing, and further accountability measures have not been ruled out.
